Southfield, Mich. — November 26, 2018 — A. Vince Colella, a civil rights and personal injury lawyer with Southfield-based Moss & Colella, P.C., registered a multi-million dollar wrongful death lawsuit today against the City of Royal Oak on behalf of their household of Cody Reynolds, a 20-year old, unarmed male shot and murdered by a Royal Oak police officer on May 14, 2018 after a domestic dispute call into the Reynolds’ family residence. Within an investigation by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s office, Police Officer Ryan Addis was cleared of any wrongdoing, finishing that Reynolds”posed a deadly threat”
Colella stated the Reynolds family is devastated by the loss of the son and in disbelief about how a telephone for assistance following a dispute in their residence resulted in the fatal shooting in minutes of their officer’s arrival.
“It’s simply inconceivable that an unarmed young man could be calmed down by authorities without prosecution,” Colella said.
About August 16, 2018, the Oakland County Prosecutor published a 10-page report clearing the officer of any wrongdoing. Colella, nevertheless, claims that the most salient and annoying truth of Reynold’s departure was discussed or clarified in the accounts.
“What’s especially disturbing about this situation is the medical examiner determined the initial bullet which struck Cody Reynolds at the top left torso (shoulder) region was non-fatal; three additional bullet wounds were discovered in his spine. Why? The report doesn’t clarify this usage of excessive and lethal force.”
Colella has represented the families of missing loved ones in many high-profile authorities shooting events between unarmed civilians, including the family of Janet Wilson, who had been captured and murdered by a Dearborn police officer in January of 2016 within her car after a verbal altercation with Fairlane mall safety. “Given that the sequential unwillingness to bring charges against police officers in deadly force instances, I was frustrated, but not astonished with the Prosecutor’s conclusion,” Colella said. “The criminal system has neglected the Reynolds’ family, like many others; thus, they’re left with no choice but to look for civil justice”
